If your Melbourne home has three-phase power, choosing a battery has often meant compromises. Tesla's new Powerwall 3P is built specifically for homes with a three-phase electrical connection. Here's what it is, what Tesla's official datasheet says it can do, and how to tell if it suits your home.

What is the Powerwall 3P?

Tesla describes the Powerwall 3P as "a fully integrated solar and battery system for homes with a three-phase electrical connection". Like the single-phase Powerwall 3, it combines a battery and a solar inverter in one unit, so solar panels can connect directly to it. You can store solar or low-cost grid energy, use it when you need it, power your home during grid outages, and manage everything in the Tesla App.

Why three-phase matters in Melbourne

Many larger and newer Melbourne homes are connected to three-phase power, often because of ducted heating and cooling, pool pumps, induction cooktops or EV charging. A three-phase home needs a battery and inverter that are designed for a three-phase connection, and that's the gap the Powerwall 3P is designed to fill. It runs on a 230/400 VAC, 50 Hz, three-phase supply.

Powerwall 3P key specifications

From Tesla's official Powerwall 3P datasheet (Australia and New Zealand):

  • Usable energy: 13.5 kWh per unit
  • Continuous power: up to 15 kW with enough solar at ambient temperatures of 25°C or below. Up to 11.5 kW is available when solar isn't available or at higher temperatures.
  • Output settings: 15, 11.5, 10 or 5 kW
  • Peak power (1 second): 21 kW for three-phase loads and 7.4 kW for single-phase loads
  • Solar input: up to 20.4 kWp, with 4 MPPTs
  • Solar to home/grid efficiency: 98.4%. Solar to battery to home/grid: 90%.
  • Backup: works with Tesla's Backup Gateway 2 as the islanding device
  • Ratings: indoor and outdoor rated, IP67 for the battery and power electronics, operating from -20°C to 50°C
  • Size and weight: 1105 x 609 x 193 mm, 138 kg, floor or wall mounted
  • Noise: under 50 dB(A) typical at 1 m
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Ethernet and cellular (LTE/4G)
  • Warranty: 10 years

Room to grow: Expansion units and multiple Powerwalls

Tesla says a single Powerwall 3P is enough to meet the energy needs of most homes. If you need more, there are two ways to scale:

  • Add Powerwall 3 Expansion units to add storage in 13.5 kWh steps. An Expansion unit has no inverter of its own, so it works with a Powerwall 3P. Up to three can be stacked behind it or wall-mounted next to it.
  • Add more Powerwall 3P units to increase both power and storage.

According to Tesla, the largest system (four Powerwall 3P units plus three Expansion units) can scale up to 60 kW and 94.5 kWh.

Is the Powerwall 3P right for my home?

It may suit you if…

  • Your home has a three-phase connection
  • You're installing new solar, or replacing an old inverter, and want one integrated system
  • You want backup during blackouts (what stays powered depends on your switchboard and system design)
  • You may want to add storage later

Talk to us first if…

  • You have a newer solar inverter in good condition that you'd like to keep
  • You're unsure whether your home is single-phase or three-phase
  • You want to compare it with other three-phase batteries

Every home is different, so we'll look at your switchboard, your usage and your existing solar before recommending a system. Not sure how big you need to go? Read how much solar battery do I really need.

What happens next

Our process is simple. First we check your meter and switchboard to confirm your home is three-phase. Next we look at your bills and your current solar, if you have any. Then we design a system that covers how much storage you need, how much backup you want and where the unit will go. You get a clear written quote, and our local team handles the installation, the paperwork and support for the life of your system.

Rebates and timing

Eligible batteries can attract the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount, and the discount reduces on 31 December 2026. Read what the 31 December 2026 rebate reduction means for you and our Victorian battery rebate guide. We'll confirm your eligibility and itemise any discount in your quote.

Single-phase home?

If your home is single-phase, the standard Tesla Powerwall 3 is the one to look at. See our Tesla Powerwall 3 page for systems and pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How much energy does a Powerwall 3P store?

Each unit stores 13.5 kWh of usable energy. You can add Expansion units in 13.5 kWh steps, up to 94.5 kWh for the largest system.

Does the Powerwall 3P have a built-in solar inverter?

Yes. It can convert up to 20.4 kW of solar across four MPPTs.

Can it back up my home in a blackout?

Yes, with Tesla's Backup Gateway 2. What stays powered depends on your system size, switchboard and how it's designed. We'll explain the options for your home.

Can it be installed outside?

Yes. It's indoor and outdoor rated, with IP67 protection for the battery and power electronics.

What's the warranty?

Tesla lists a 10-year warranty.
