"Is there still a battery rebate in Victoria?" is one of the questions we hear most. The short answer: yes, there's a federal battery discount Victorians can claim, but Solar Victoria's current household rebate is for solar panels rather than batteries. Over the past couple of years the rules have changed several times, so a lot of older articles (including some of ours) now carry out-of-date figures. Here's where things stand in late 2026.

The quick answer

  • Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program: about 30% off the upfront cost of eligible batteries from 5–100 kWh, delivered as an STC discount on your quote (DCCEEW).
  • Solar Victoria: the current household rebate is for solar panels (up to $1,400, plus an optional matching interest-free loan for eligible households) (Solar Victoria).
  • Batteries: Solar Victoria's current household rebate is for solar panels, and battery support comes from the federal program. Check solar.vic.gov.au for the latest.

The federal discount in detail

Who can get it

Households, businesses and community organisations installing an eligible battery connected to a new or existing solar system (DCCEEW). The battery and installer must meet the program requirements. A reputable retailer will handle this for you.

How much it's worth

The discount depends on the battery's usable capacity and the STC factor on your install date. For installs from May to December 2026 the factor is 6.8 STCs per kWh. It falls to 5.7 when rebates reduce on 31 December 2026 (CER). The full factor applies to the first 14 kWh, 60% to the next 14 kWh, and 15% from 28 to 50 kWh.

To estimate a dollar value: usable kWh × STC factor (with the taper) × STC market price. The market price moves, so your quote should show the discount as its own line item.

How you receive it

Most people assign their STCs to the retailer, who takes the value off the invoice. You don't have to fill in a separate application.

What happened to the Victorian battery rebate?

Solar Victoria has offered battery support in the past, and some older articles (including earlier posts on our blog) describe offers that applied at the time. Always check the date of what you're reading, and confirm current programs at solar.vic.gov.au. If you read anywhere about a Victorian battery rebate "on top" of the federal discount, check the date of the article.

Solar panels: the Victorian rebate that remains

If you're installing solar panels with your battery, Solar Victoria's solar panel rebate may help. Eligible households can get up to $1,400 off, and can choose a matching interest-free loan repaid over four years (Solar Victoria). Eligibility rules cover ownership, income and previous solar at the property. You also need to be approved before installation.

Solar Victoria has announced that household solar PV support will move to the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program from 1 July 2027 (Solar Victoria).

Stacking it all together

For a typical Melbourne home adding solar and a battery, your savings may include:

  1. STC discount on the solar panels (Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme)
  2. STC discount on the battery (Cheaper Home Batteries)
  3. Solar Victoria panel rebate, if eligible
  4. Ongoing savings from using your own power instead of buying it from the grid, plus any VPP credits

A good quote lists each of these separately, so you can see exactly what you're paying.

Watch out for

  • "Limited time state rebate" claims that don't match Solar Victoria's website.
  • Quotes with no breakdown of the STC discount.
  • Pressure to sign today. The federal factor changes on known dates, so you can plan ahead without being rushed.

Frequently asked questions

Can renters get the battery discount? The federal program is based on the installation rather than home ownership, but you'll need the owner's permission. Solar Victoria has its own rules for rental properties.

Do I have to join a VPP to get the federal discount? Joining a VPP is your choice. For the program's current battery requirements, see the Clean Energy Regulator. See our VPP guide.

Is the discount available for adding a battery to old solar? Yes, it covers batteries connected to existing solar too. See Adding a battery to existing solar.
