The Tesla Powerwall 3 is one of the best-known home batteries in Australia, and it's one of the systems we install for Melbourne homes. But a well-known name doesn't automatically make it the right battery for you. This guide covers what the Powerwall 3 is, what affects its installed price in Melbourne, how the federal discount applies, and when another battery might suit you better.

What is the Powerwall 3?

Unlike earlier Powerwalls, the Powerwall 3 has a built-in solar inverter, so solar panels can connect directly to it. Each unit provides about 13.5 kWh of usable energy. Ask us about current specifications and expansion options.

Because it combines a battery and a hybrid inverter in one unit, it often works well in:

  • New solar + battery installs, where it can replace a separate solar inverter
  • Homes with an old or failing inverter that needs replacing anyway

Is it a good fit for my home?

Suits you if…

  • You use a fair amount of power in the evening and overnight
  • You want whole-home or large-circuit backup (subject to your switchboard and site)
  • You like a polished app and simple monitoring
  • You're installing new solar, or your current inverter is near the end of its life

Consider alternatives if…

  • You already have a newer inverter in good condition. An AC-coupled or modular battery may cost less to add.
  • You want a lot more than ~14 kWh. Modular systems such as Sigenstor or FoxESS can be scaled in smaller steps.
  • Your budget is the main concern. We'll compare options side by side.

Sapphire installs a range of brands, including Tesla, Sigenstor, FoxESS, SAJ and Sungrow, so we can recommend what suits your home rather than whichever brand we happen to sell.

What affects the installed price in Melbourne?

We're not going to throw out a generic price. Every home is different, and a figure that ignores your site can mislead you. The main cost drivers are:

  1. Number of units. One Powerwall, or one plus expansion.
  2. Switchboard condition. Many older Melbourne homes need an upgrade.
  3. Backup scope. Whole-home or selected circuits, and whether a gateway is needed.
  4. Location and mounting. Cable runs, wall type, garage or outdoor install, and clearance requirements.
  5. Solar configuration. New panels, re-using existing panels, or both.
  6. The STC discount on your install date.

As a guide, our Tesla Powerwall 3 product page currently lists a single Tesla 13.5kWh + Gateway at $12,750, with all prices shown after applicable rebates have been applied. Multi-unit options are listed there too. Because the federal rebate depends on your install date and your site may need extra work, the best way to get a real number is a site-specific quote.

How the federal discount applies

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program discount is based on usable capacity and the STC factor on your installation date (CER). A single Powerwall 3 at about 13.5 kWh sits within the first 14 kWh, so it gets the full factor. A second unit or expansion earns 60% of the factor for each kWh above 14.

The factor drops from 6.8 to 5.7 STCs per kWh on 31 December 2026. Read more in our post on the 31 December 2026 rebate change.

Powerwall 3 and Melbourne's low feed-in tariffs

Victoria no longer has a regulated minimum feed-in tariff. Retailers set their own rates, and these can be as low as 0c/kWh (Essential Services Commission). When exports earn very little, storing your solar to use after dark is usually worth more. That's where a battery earns its keep. See our feed-in tariff explainer.

Backup: set expectations early

The Powerwall 3 can provide backup during a grid outage. How much of the house it can run depends on your system design and the appliances you run. Ducted heating, ovens and EV chargers can drain a battery quickly. We'll talk you through what will and won't run during an outage. Read Will my battery power my whole house?

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a Powerwall 3 to my existing solar? Often, yes. It may connect directly or alongside your existing inverter, depending on your setup. We'll assess this on site.

Can a Powerwall 3 join a VPP? Some VPPs support Tesla batteries. Ask us which current offers are compatible.

What warranty does it come with? Ask us for the current manufacturer warranty terms and our workmanship warranty details when we quote.

How long does installation take? It depends on your site. Approvals and switchboard work can add time, so ask us about current lead times.
